Billy began his professional baseball career with the New York Mets through 1980 MLB draft. Following he was dropped to Mets affiliate minor league baseball teams including Little Falls Mets, Lynchburg Mets after his poor batting of .210. Traded with Minnesota Twins and Detroit Tigers, Beane signed the Oakland in 1988, where he became general manager and front office manager for the team.

Beane was chosen over Darryl Strawberry by the Mets where he could only bat 210 in the first season when at Little Falls Mets of the Class A New York-Penn League.
