Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen resigns

Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, Trade Minister, has resigned from the cabinet, according to reliable sources.

According to several sources close to the minister, he submitted his resignation letter to President Nana Akufo-Addo on Thursday, January 5, 2023.

The individual known as ‘Alan Cash’ has long been rumored to be considering running for the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearership (NPP).

However, it is unclear whether the departure is to allow him to focus on that objective. Mr Kyerematen ran for the NPP leadership in 2007, receiving 32.3% of the votes cast.

He finished second to Nana Akufo-Addo, who received 47.96% of the votes cast.

Political journey so far

Mr Kyerematen ran for the party’s leadership again in 2010 and 2014, but came in second to Akufo-Addo, who won the primaries.

In 2012, Ghana proposed Kyerematen to succeed outgoing Director-General Pascal Lamy as WTO Director-General, and his candidacy was supported by the African Union (AU).

However, he did not make the final selection process shortlist in 2013.

Kyerematen was sworn in as Ghana’s Trade Minister in 2017.

More on that later.
