I paid each of the 800+ delegates GH₵1,000 but got just 22 votes – Asare Bediako

Mr. Robert Asare Bediako, one of the regional candidates for the chairperson post in the Ashanti Region, has admitted to paying GHS1,000 to each delegate who participated in the New Patriotic Party’s recent delegates conference but still lost.

Mr. Barnard Antwi Boasiako, the incumbent, was retained.
Chairman Wontumi, as Mr. Boasiako is known in political circles, received 464 votes to defeat his chief rival Odeneho Kwaku Appiah (COKA), who received 302 votes.

Mr. Asare Bediako received 22 votes, while Mr. Kwabena Owusu Aduomi and Mr. Oheneba Kofi Adum Bawuah received 9 and 3 votes, respectively.

Mr. Bediako stated on Akoma FM’s current affairs and political program, GhanAkoma, on Monday, 30 May 2022, “while I was paying each delegate GH1,000, I thought I would win, but others paid more than me, so the delegates also gave in to the highest bidder, and it’s very concerning that monetisation has become the norm in our body politics.”
